Food and Nutrition

We are proud to be part of the Nourishing Our Future Award that supports early years settings across Essex to implement the new EYFS Nutrition Guidance (see below), creating healthier food foundations for young children and families

Menu

Our Spring Term menu has been carefully planned in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) nutrition guidance to support young children’s growth, development and overall wellbeing. It offers a balanced variety of foods from all food groups. The menu may vary to reflect seasonal availability, cultural diversity, individual dietary requirements, allergies and preferences.

"Eating is an important part of everyone's life.  Encouraging children and young people to eat healthily does not mean denying them food they enjoy.  Healthy eating is about having a varied, balanced diet and enjoying lots of different foods."

Small Wonders is proud of the fact that all our meals are prepared in house by our own Catering Department using fresh seasonal produce.  Healthy eating and physical activity are fundamental in childhood and essential for good health and well-being in later life.  We encourage our children to develop patterns of healthy eating from an early age, exposing them to positive attitudes to good nutrition.

Safe Preparation of Food

Food can be a choking hazard for babies and young children, especially when they do not chew their food well. The NHS has provided useful guidance on the preparation of foods that pose a choking risk.

Cup Guidance

Free-flowing cups are better for babies than valve cups because they promote natural oral motor skills for sipping, swallowing and speech development, unlike valve cups that require sucking and can hinder proper tongue placement and swallowing patterns. Free-flowing cups help babies learn to control liquid flow, which is essential for developing the correct muscles needed for both drinking and speaking.
